Most tennis players who wear a smartwatch never look at the data afterwards. The numbers sit in Apple Health or Garmin Connect, get aggregated into a weekly "active minutes" badge, and contribute nothing to their tennis. This article explains what each zone means *for tennis specifically*, what the averages tell you about your fitness, and how to train smarter without your tennis becoming a cardio session.

What the four headline numbers mean
Average calories burned is the most-quoted number and the least useful. Calorie estimates from wrist watches are accurate to roughly ±20% in the best case and ±50% in the worst. They depend on stride, weight calibration, watch model and even how tight the strap is. Use the trend, not the absolute number — if your average match calories drop over six months at the same intensity, your fitness is improving (less energy needed for the same load).
Average duration is the most genuinely useful headline. Tennis matches have wide variance — 45 minutes for a quick 6-1 6-1, 2+ hours for a deciding-set grind. The average across many matches tells you your typical court time, which is what you should be training for. If your matches average 99 minutes, your fitness work should regularly hit 100 minutes of intermittent intensity.
Average BPM is the simplest fitness indicator. A lower average BPM over the same duration of match means a fitter heart. Track it monthly — 1-2 BPM drops over a season is a real improvement.
Max BPM is the ceiling your heart hit during play. It is mostly genetic (220 minus age is a very rough estimate) but the *frequency* with which you hit it matters. A match where you spike near max repeatedly is a much harder workout than a match with the same average BPM but no spikes.
The five heart-rate zones, explained for tennis
Tennis Log shows your average time in each of five standard zones:
Zone 1 — Warm up (50-60% of max HR). Walking between points, light rallies. This is your *recovery* zone. Too much time here in a match means you were rarely under pressure. Twenty minutes per match is typical.
Zone 2 — Fat burn (60-70%). Easy rallies, low-intensity exchanges. Most amateur tennis lives here. This is the zone where you can hold a conversation. Long average time in Zone 2 is the signature of a casual match — not a bad thing, but it does not build match fitness.
Zone 3 — Aerobic (70-80%). Sustained rallies, regular movement, second-serve aggression. This is the *productive* zone for tennis fitness. A typical competitive amateur match should spend 25-40% of its time here.
Zone 4 — Anaerobic (80-90%). Long points, deep court coverage, third-set tension. Most points decided in Zone 4 are the ones you remember. Low time in Zone 4 across a season often means you avoid pressure points — investigate.
Zone 5 — VO2 max (90%+). Brief spikes during long sprints, lunges, all-out points. Rarely more than 2-3 minutes per match for amateurs. If you never see Zone 5, your matches are likely not competitive enough to drive cardiovascular adaptation.
What a healthy distribution looks like
For a competitive amateur in a normal singles match, a typical Tennis Log heart-rate profile looks roughly like:
- Zone 1: 20-25 minutes
- Zone 2: 30-40 minutes (the largest bar — this is normal)
- Zone 3: 25-35 minutes
- Zone 4: 5-12 minutes
- Zone 5: 0-3 minutes
If your profile is heavily skewed toward Zones 1-2, your matches are not driving aerobic adaptation — supplement with running or interval bike work. If your profile is heavily skewed toward Zones 4-5, your matches are exceptionally intense and recovery becomes the priority — you may be over-reaching.
How to upload watch data to Tennis Log
After the match, take a screenshot of your workout summary screen on Apple Watch, Garmin, Polar, Huawei, Suunto or Coros. In the match form, drop the screenshot in the smartwatch field. An AI vision model extracts calories, duration, average BPM, max BPM and zone breakdowns. Verify the numbers — vision OCR is excellent but not perfect — and save.
You only need to do this for matches where the watch was actually on the right wrist (i.e., the racket-holding wrist gets erratic readings — use your non-dominant wrist). One missed screenshot is fine; the averages still work.
Reading the trends, not the individual matches
Single-match heart-rate data is interesting but unreliable. The screenshot might be from a partial workout, you might have started the timer late, the watch might have lost contact. Always read the averages across many matches. Five matches is the minimum. Twenty is when the data is genuinely trustworthy.
Common mistakes with watch data
- Comparing across watches. Garmin and Apple use different zone formulas. Pick one watch and stick with it. Your data is only comparable to itself.
- Chasing higher BPM. Tennis is not a heart-rate competition. A lower average BPM at the same level of play is a *good* thing — it means you are fitter.
- Treating calorie counts as nutrition truth. They are not. They are a relative load indicator, useful only for comparison across matches.
- Confusing duration with effort. A long match in Zone 1-2 is less demanding than a short match in Zone 4-5.
- Skipping screenshots when you lose. The hardest matches have the most informative HR data. Losing four games to love is when you most want to know if your heart was redlining or coasting.
How to use the data for training
Once you have averages from 10+ matches, use the profile to guide off-court conditioning:
- Too much time in Z1-Z2, not enough in Z3: Add steady-state cardio (long bike rides, easy runs) 1-2x per week.
- Solid Z3 but no Z4: Add interval work — 4x4 minutes at hard effort, 3-minute easy between.
- Frequent Z5 spikes with poor recovery (heart stays high between points): Train heart-rate *variability*. Short sprints, full recovery to Z1, repeat.
- Low max BPM that has plateaued: This is your genetics; build efficiency in the lower zones instead of chasing the ceiling.
The watch data turns vague feelings ("I was tired today") into specifics ("I spent 18 minutes in Zone 4, which is double my season average — no wonder"). That specificity is the entire point of tracking.
The one chart that matters most
If you only check one chart, it should be the time in Zone 3 across your last 20 matches. This is the zone where amateur tennis fitness is built and lost. A rising trend means your matches are getting more competitive. A falling trend means you are coasting or your opponents are weaker. Either way, the trend is information.
The wrist data is not the goal of tennis. It is the receipt. Read the receipt, then go back to playing.
